Performance evaluation of cylindrical fiber optic light diffusers for biomedical applications

Abstract: To enable light dosimetry and treatment planning for applications such as photodynamic therapy or interstitial laser hyperthermia or photocoagulation, standardization of emission properties reporting for optical fiber diffusers is required.

“…1). The component is made by mixing either aluminum dioxide powder (1μm in diameter, SA-32, Tyng Hang Industrial Co. Ltd., Taiwan) or optical diffuse powder (2μm in diameter, HSP-200, Sau Inc., Taiwan) with UV (ultraviolet) gel (Norland 61, Norland Products Inc., USA) [16,17]. The ratio (in weight) of the powder to the UV gel is approximately 7%~10%.…”

“…3(b)). Note that the full width at half maximum (FWHM) is used to characterize the illumination angles from the LIDC [16,17,20]. In both cases the intensity achieved is greater than the sensitivity threshold of the CMOS camera module.…”

“…12 In an attempt to obtain homogeneous light distribution, an optical diffuser has been developed and evaluated for endometrial ablation. [14][15][16][17][18] The diffuser was created by removing the cladding and adding a diffusing medium such as silicon and scattering particles on the core surface. However, the applied power level (≤25 W) was relatively lower than the requirement for surgical tissue removal, in that most applications were related to photodynamic therapy (PDT).…”

“…12,16 In addition to the axial and circumferential (azimuthal) directions, measurement of the polar radiance distribution has been performed to provide a more thorough assessment of the diffuser emission. [17][18][19] We have developed a technique for constructing high-power light diffusing devices comprised of a flexible shape memory polymer (SMP) cylindrical diffuser attached to the tip of an optical fiber. These diffusers were initially developed to provide a means of photothermal actuation for the devices mentioned previously, 8-10 though other applications are possible.…”
