Performance evaluation of decision feedback equalizers in fiber communication links

Abstract: In this paper, the performance of the conventional Decision Feedback (DFE) equalizer as well as the Volterra DFE is investigated in the context of intensity modulated direct detection optical communications links, when non-return to zero on-off keyed (NRZ-OOK) and optical differential encoded phase shift keyed (NRZ-DPSK) transmission is employed. The DFE is used to mitigate either the residual chromatic dispersion resulting from the incomplete optical compensation or the accumulated chromatic dispersion result… Show more

“…According to the available DSP resources, two VDFE configurations among the efficient VDFEs proposed in [6] were selected, namely the VDFE(5,3) and VDFE (7,4). Also, three throughput targets (5,7, and 10Gb/s) were set in order to study the scalability of the designed architectures, which correspond to the first column of TABLE I for both FPGA devices (Virtex-6 -V6, Virtex-7 -V7).…”

“…However, in IM/DD systems, the conventional DFE, consisting of linear filters, is not able to efficiently mitigate the ISI, because the CD has a nonlinear effect. In order to face the nonlinearities, the use of second order Volterra filters as FFF and FBF has been proposed [5], [6].…”

“…Channel equalizers are used at the receiver part to suppress the Intersymbol Interference (ISI), which is the result of the overlapping between the current symbol with previous and subsequent ones [4]- [10]. To achieve this, Decision Feedback Equalizers (DFEs) are widely used [11].…”

“…However, due to the non-linear nature of the optical receiver, the efficiency of the conventional DFE, which consists of linear FIR filters, is not sufficient [10]. Thus, DFEs based on recursive Volterra filters (Volterra DFEs -VDFEs) have been proposed [4], [5], [8]- [10].…”
