This research investigates the applicability of bentonite enhanced termite mound soil mixture as an alternative filter medium for paint industrial wastewater (PIWW) management in a constructed pilot-scale filtration tank with four different sections. The mixture of bentonite (BC) and termite mound soil (MS) used as the filter was proportioned by percentage weight as (100% MS), $${\text{(5\% BC}} + {\text{95\% MS),}}$$ (5\% BC + 95\% MS), $${\text{(10\% BC}} + {\text{90\% MS),}}$$ (10\% BC + 90\% MS), $${\text{(15\% BC}} + {\text{85\% MS)}}$$ (15\% BC + 85\% MS) and placed into four sections, respectively. The filter materials were compacted, cured and subjected to wastewater loading for 30 weeks. The results obtained from the analysis of the filtrate samples revealed that filter with 15% BC content generally exhibited high and effective pollutant removal efficiencies of 51.3%, 98.9%, and 72.7% for total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, and copper, respectively, while a maximum removal efficiency of 100% was recorded for lead, chromium and cadmium. The pollutants (TDS, TSS, Pb, Cr, Cu and Cd) concentrations of the treated PIWW were below the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency permissible limits for discharge. Hence, the 15% bentonite and 85% termite mound soil mixtures are recommended for the small-scale paint industries as a point of use measure for effective pollutant removal. Its application would mitigate the degradation of environmental resources caused by indiscriminate disposal of untreated effluent.

It has been demonstrated that the ceramic pot filters (CPFs) with impregnated colloidal silver are efficient for the removal of turbidity and pathogens for household water treatment. This investigation evaluated the efficiency of two filter models for the removal of chemical contaminants (Hg, Pb, As and phenolic compounds) during 175 days. The first model is a traditional CPF impregnated with colloidal silver and the second consists of the ceramic silver-impregnated pot plus a post-filtration column with granular activated carbon and zeolite (CPF + GAC-Z). The results of the CPF showed average efficiencies of 91.5% (Hg), 92% (Pb), 50.2% (As) and 78.7% (phenols). The CPF + GAC-Z showed similar efficiencies for the removal of heavy metals (92.5% Hg, 98.1% Pb and 52.3% As) and a considerably higher efficiency for the removal of phenols (96.4%). The As concentration of the filtered water in both systems was higher than the regulatory limit. The ceramic pot was responsible for the highest removal of chemical compounds. It can be concluded that the traditional CPF is a viable option for water supply treatment at the household level for the removal of chemical contaminants. The efficiency of this filter can be improved with the post-filtration column mainly for the removal of organic constituents.

Public places within Nigeria are ever humming with tremendous activity and accordingly reflecting growth and development of the host cities. The ensuing channelization demands of these centres calls for apposite sanitation to enhancing efficient operation and utilization. This study was undertaken to assess the present status of onsite sanitation facilities in public places within Akure, to trace problems related to sanitation and solid waste management. Logical sampling methods were used to sample the users and passers-by of selected public places. Primary data were acquired from scrutinizing sanitation facilities, employing questionnaire, and interviewing the chief players- drivers and traders- in these centres. Qualitative and quantitative data obtained from both primary and secondary sources were employed for this study. Survey facts were analyzed using descriptive statistical method while Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) was further utilized in results analysis. The outcomes showed existing sanitary facilities are insufficient to match the populace, and a poor maintenance of these facilitates credited to unavailability of dedicated management staff coupled with flawed maintenance and monitoring by local authorities. This is occasioned by lower than normal patronage. Further, the general experience of the respondent with regard to these facilities were rather unpleasant. Combating strategies to the established challenges in the selected centres are active governmental involvement in restructuring these places in conformity with standard requirements; community support programs, and a supervisory team routinely overseeing the reliability and development of sanitation facilities.
