Performance Evaluation of the Impact of QoS Mechanisms in an IPv6 Network for IPv6-Capable Real-Time Applications

Abstract: This paper describes a Quality of Service (QoS) service on an IPv6 domain that aims to service aggregates of real-time traffic with minimum delay, jitter, and packet loss. It contains results from the tests that were performed in order to configure and evaluate the QoS mechanisms. As an actual example of real-time traffic, we have used the OpenH323 project, an open source H.323 implementation that has been ported to IPv6. The QoS mechanisms in IPv6 networks is still a field that has not been researched adequat… Show more

“…Several approaches are proposed in the literature [14][15][16][17], despite the use of the FL field is not fully defined. Moreover, recommendations for these approaches are confirmed by some experimental studies [31]. FL, which can increase QoS, is used with different architectures such as DiffServ [13,32].…”

“…The FL field is 20 bits long and the approach of using this field is given in Figure 5. Per hop behavior identification code (DiffServ PHB-ID) [15] is quite a good approach in terms of performance compared to others [31]. The proposed FL structure in this paper is completely different in terms of usage of the field in this structure although it is comparable to the DiffServ PHB-ID approach.…”

“…Several researches have concentrated on the IPv6 network performance over the last decade. There is a very large literature on general aspects of the new Internet Protocol IPv6 and its QoS evaluation are described in [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] [18].…”

“…It key benefit over IPv4 is scalability and many features of IPv6 are IPv4 "add on". IPv6 header has two QoS-related fields, the new 20-bit Flow Label field which can be used for the implementation of IntServ-based QoS schemes, and 8bit Traffic Class indicator which can be used for the implementation of DiffServbased QoS schemes (Bouras et al, 2004). The Flow Label can be used in order to identify specific flows in the network and allows intermediate nodes in the flow path to recognize the flow and treat it appropriately.…”
