This study focuses on the design and construction of an improved crushing machine with a capacity of 0.15 (150 kg/hr) tons per hour, 15 Hp, and 2910 rpm speed. The design follows criterion design guidelines to ensure the improved service life of the component. When the values produced from the current design approach were contrasted with the values and outcomes received from the analysis using the Ansys package, the design should be reliable. The hammers produced are subjected to carburisation process using bio-wastes such as coconut shells, saw dust, and palm kernel shells to enhance the reliability of the machine. The bending of the shaft is controlled during the rotation at rated speed rpm when a load is applied to the shaft. The critical speed of the shaft is experienced with deflection when the shaft rotates freely. The natural frequency and speed were put under check in order to avoid failure. The von Mises stress was employed as a yielding criterion for the shaft. It states that if the components of stress operating on a body are more than the criterion, the body will yield.

The research aims to compare the performance (PC) and specific energy consumption (Spc.) of the hammer mill when using the T-hammer against the (traditional) rectangular hammer. A homemade mill with four hammers was used in experiment. 36 treatments: 2 hammer shape x 3 impact area (840, 720 and 960 mm2) x 2 feeding rates (1500 and 3000 g min-1) x 3 replicates, with completely random design. The results showed that there was no significant effect of hammer shape on PC at the feed rate of 3000 g min-1, while there was an effect at the rate of 1500 g min-1. An effect was also found for the impact area on the PC at both feeding rates and on Spc., as an inverse relationship appeared between the impact area and mill productivity at the feed rate 1500 g min-1. The area of 720 mm2 surpassed the area 480 and 960 mm2 at the rate of feeding 3000 g min-1, as it recorded 1215.65 g min-1 compared to 950.65 and 882.65 g min-1, respectively. There is effect of feeding rate on PC and Spc. The traditional hammer is recommended for simplicity of design, manufacture and performance at high feed rates compared to the T-shaped hammer.

Crop residues are considered among the most important materials in Ethiopia especially maize stalk, bean stalk, sorghum stalk, and wheat and barley straw. There are many types and models of imported top hammer miller in Ethiopia to assist in milling the grain. Those machines which are imported have many problems such as size of mill and rusting of hammers which not advisable to human food. Therefore the machines adapted and evaluated for livestock feed process purpose in terms of crop residues like maize stalk, bean stalk and wheat straw with predetermined feed rate and hammers' shaft speed (RPM). The research was conducted at Asella Agricultural Engineering Research Center (AAERC), Maki and Bokoji district to evaluate the machine performance in crushing maize stalk, bean stalk, and wheat straw for animal feed. In this paper, two top feed hammer mills were used. They are collected from market and Bako Agricultural Engineering Research Center (BAERC). The performance of the machine is evaluated in terms of crushing capacity, crushing efficiency and crushing loss. The output of the market top hammer miller was satisfactory. The market top hammer miller produced a highest crushing efficiency and capacity about 99.33 % and 152.54 kg/hr while the BAERC's was produced 94% and 78.68 kg/hr, respectively. The crushing losses of the market top hammer miller were 2.67, 0.67 and 5 % on maize stalk, bean stalk and wheat straw respectively.
