Performance of modified and low complexity pulse shaping filters for IEEE 802.11 OFDM transmission

Abstract: The most commonly used multicarrier modulation method in 802.11 wireless communication systems is Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). However, OFDM is easily affected by Inter Symbol Interference (ISI). In this paper, different pulse shaping filters are employed in the OFDM system and three new filters are presented to further reduce ISI effects. The first one is a Modified Parametric Exponential Pulse (MPEXP) filter which employs a different transfer function that is implemented at the transmit… Show more

“…The chosen window function affects the stopbands attenuation and the main lobe size. For f-OFDM systems [14], the window function is determined by the desired trade-off between the level of side lobes and frequency localization. After selecting the windowing function, we have applied the windowing technique.…”

“…Moreover, waveforms of 5G NR and other digitally modulated signals are more complicated than a series of square-wave-modulated pulses as in Equation (1). To suppress intersymbol interference and other undesirable effects from sidebands, designers of 5G equipment include sophisticated filtering algorithms [9]. In addition, a signal radiated from any personal cellular communication device or other transmitter is limited in bandwidth by the electronic circuits generating the RF signals, the transmission lines feeding the antennas, and the antennas themselves.…”

“…Several methods have been introduced to mitigate ICI such as pulse shaping [5][6][7][8][9][10], frequency domain equalization [11], ICI self-cancellation schemes [12], windowing [13] at the receiver and Maximum likelihood estimation technique (MLE) [14]. In this paper, pulse shaping methods have been considered due to its TELKOMNIKA Telecommun Comput El Control  Pulse shaping methods for inter carrier interference reduction in OFDM system (N. M. A. E. D. Wirastuti) 2277 simplicity and efficiency [15].…”
