Performance of the Versatile Array of Neutron Detectors at Low Energy (VANDLE)

Abstract: highly efficient plastic-scintillator array constructed for decay and transfer reaction experimental setups that require neutron detection. The versatile and modular design allows for customizable experimental setups including beta-delayed neutron spectroscopy and (d,n) transfer reactions in normal and inverse kinematics. The neutron energy and prompt-photon discrimination is determined through the time of flight technique. Fully digital data acquisition electronics and integrated triggering logic enables some… Show more

“…The FPs will be measured with a sub-nanosecond TOF detector, which detection efficiency is ~80% [127], enabling mass spectroscopy with resolving power of a few 10 5 , accuracy of ~10 -7 , and isobaric and isomeric separations with intensity ratios of up to a few hundred [126,128], characteristics that are sufficient for most nuclear-and astro-physics needs. Conversely, they may be transported to further experimental stations (with an estimated transmission of ~80% as well), which can include an array of neutron, beta and gamma detectors such as VANDLE [129], and/or a laser spectroscopy system such as the one at the IGISOL facility at U. Jyvaskyla [130].…”

“…The beta decay strength distribution of waiting point nuclei is extremely valuable to anchor nuclear models necessary to calculate half-lives farther away from stability. Due to the expected large neutron branching ratio, the neutron time-of-flight detector VANDLE [17] was installed at IDS together with the four HPGe clover shown on the left hand side of Fig. 3.…”

“…The early implementation of HAGRiD, with 2"x2" crystals coupled to a combination of Hamamatsu R7724, R7224-100, and R6231-100 PMTs, has been used in experiments with the Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics (JENSA) gas jet target 18 at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) and in β-delayed neutron emission studies at the HRIBF. A recent β-delayed neutron emission experiment at the NSCL with the Versatile Array of Neutron Detectors (VANDLE) 19,20 used HAGRiD with the optimized R6231-100 PMT's in a temporary coupling. Once the array is completed, its flexibility to be positioned around the JENSA gas target, other γ detectors, or neutron detectors will make it a valuable component of experiments studying the decay or reactions of exotic nuclei.…”
