Performance of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus L.) in response to organic and NPK fertilizers

Abstract: Abstract. The soil of North-Central Nigeria is home to many plant products that are used as industrial raw materials, and after processing their waste are often left in drainage channels, which ultimately find their way into rivers and streams where they pollute these water bodies, and sometimes some of these materials are burnt, which further aggravates global warming. In addition, the soil of the region is characterized by low organic matter content because of annual bush burnings, which reduce the low humus… Show more

“…The ash content (5.165±0.003) which is close to that reported for melon seeds varieties. [10]. The high fat content (lipid) (18.208± 0.004) obtained in the water melon seeds are comparable to commonly known oil seeds likely groundnut may reach up to 50% (Pancholly et al, 1978) The high value of tannins in human diet can cause side effect such as irritation, nausea, vomiting and liver damaged [11].…”

“…Furthermore, integrated nutrition including the use organic and inorganic constituents results in significant stimulation of various physiological and metabolic processes that lead to improved plant growth and floral attributes (Singh et al 2013). Moreover, Kabir et al (2011) and Eifediyi et al (2017) also documented that floral characteristics improved when organic fertilizers were combined with mineral fertilizers compared to the sole application of mineral fertilizers.…”

“…Nutrient supply through manure application is eco-friendly and ecologically acceptable, as it improves soil biological activity and soil physicochemical properties (Eifediyi et al, 2017). In addition to nutrient release via mineralisation, manure application also affects soil properties.…”
