“…In most of the crops the number of leaves (branches)/ plant was relatively higher in open condition than under tree canopy because of availability of more light. The results are in line with the findings of rice and mungbean intercropped with A. mangium, A. auriculiformis and Gliricidia sepium (Miah et al (1997) and wheat varieties were raised in agrisilvicultural system (Puri et al (2001 (Dhyani and Chauhan, 1989), ginger raised under coconut (Jayachandran et al, 1991) and ginger and turmeric grown under poplar (Jasural et al, 1993 (George and Nair, 1987), three wheat varieties grown under Populus deltoides (Singh et al, 1993), Cicer arietinum, Brassica juncea and Dolichos lablab intercropped with C. equisetifolia, Adina cordifolia and Gmelina arborea (Maheta et al, 1996), Prosopis cineraria with Cassia angustifolia (Vyas, 2001), D. sissoo with sesamum (Naugraiya and Jhapatsingh, 2005) and C. equisetifolia, E. hybrid, D. sissoo and Tectona grandis with ragi, sesamum, black gram and cowpea (Mohanty et al, 2008). “…In most of the studies, localised varieties were grown under poplar at the recommended date of sowing such as Inqalab-91 in Faisalabad (Chaudhry et al 2003);PBW-226, WH-542, HD-2329, PBW-154 andPBW-299 in Punjab (Pannu andDhillon 1999); HS-295, Sonalika, HD-2285 and HD-2380 in Himachal Pradesh (Chauhan and Dhiman 2007); HUW-234 in Bihar; HD-2285 in Uttar Pradesh (Sharma et al 2001) and Sujata, Lok-1, Kanchan and GW-174 in Chhattisgarh (Puri et al 2001). In most of these studies, the wheat varieties were evaluated based on their one year performance (Singh et al 1993;Pannu and Dhillon 1999) or conclusions were drawn based on survey and discussions with farmers (Kumar et al 2004;Jain and Singh 2000). Competition for below and above ground resources often changes with the increase in tree age.…”

“…Eucalyptus) provides favorable microclimatic conditions for the crops [ 17 , 76 , 77 ]. Tree canopy structure and distance from crops affects crop performance [ 21 , 19 , 23 ]. In some cases, toxic effects from trees could reduce the crop yield [ 18 , 20 ].…”
