Peri-urbanization in developing countries is a double-edged sword. It creates many economic opportunities but disrupts peri-urban livelihoods. Through a systematic literature review, we present a comprehensive overview of peri-urbanization and livelihood dynamics in China, India, and Indonesia. Data shows that physical urban development is outpacing population growth, leading to increased livelihood assets and outcomes but also disruptions. The rapid urban expansion increased peri-urban livelihood assets, leading to increased income and wellbeing for off-farm workers, while farmers faced landlessness, water degradation, and migrant competition. The findings encourage regional scientists and professionals collaboration with the government on peri-urban planning to develop a common framework for sustainable periurban livelihoods that anticipates spatial-demographic changes and livelihood pattern dynamics to identify and address future challenges.

Peri-urban agriculture plays a critical role in sustaining food security and livelihoods in urban communities. In spite of the critical role it plays in food security, peri-urban agriculture has not received adequate attention with regards to its interface with climate change in Zimbabwe. Using a sample of thirty peri-urban plots selected through snowballing, this study investigated the farmers' perceived effects of climate change on peri-urban agriculture in Bulawayo, and how farmers were adapting to climate change. The findings of the study revealed that peri-urban farmers perceived and observed significant climatic and related changes that were negatively impacting their farming activities. Observed changes included reduced precipitation levels, increased atmospheric temperature and diminishing borehole yields. Farmers were adapting with a variety of methods which included repeated planting, watering plants during the night, renting animal space in other farms with more water sources and purchasing supplementary feed for livestock. Among other issues, this study recommends the promotion of the use of drought tolerant seed varieties, improved water harvesting and a more rationalised system in managing livestock numbers in the plots.

Poverty is a global socio-economic phenomenon. It is always a problem in all countries include developing countries and developed countries. In Vietnam, the poverty rate has been decreasing while the urbanization has happened rapidly over the past 20 years. Handling the dual problems of urbanization and poverty is important to be able to attain sustainable development. Therefore, this study is to analyze the impact of urbanization on poverty reduction in Vietnam. Using Driscoll and Kraay's method and D-GMM method to estimate the provinces' panel data in the period 2006-2016, we confirm that there exists a U-shape relationship between the level of urbanization and the poverty level in Vietnam. Moreover, the estimated thresholds of urbanization from the perspective of poverty reduction are 40.19% and 43.68% in the static and dynamic model, respectively. In addition, our results exhibit that the gross regional domestic product, human capital, and agricultural value have the effect of reducing poverty, but government spending and export value increases the poverty rate in Vietnam. The paper has relevant implications for policymakers.
