Periodically Aligned Liquid Crystal: Potential Application for Projection Displays

Abstract: Abstract:A nematic liquid crystal (NLC) layer with the anisotropy axis modulated at a fixed rate q in the transverse direction is considered. If the layer locally constitutes a half-wave plate, then the thin-screen approximation predicts 100% -efficient diffraction of normal incident wave. The possibility of implementing such a layer via anchoring at both surfaces of a cell with thickness L is studied as a function of parameter qL and threshold values of this parameter are found for a variety of cases. Distort… Show more

“…Intuitively, one may therefore assume that liquid crystals with large K 2 and small K 3 − K 1 result in more stable polarization gratings By assuming a small distortion θ n depending only on z (where z is the coordinate normal to the grating plane), it can be shown analytically that the director in Eq. (10) does not correspond to a minimum of the total free energy when the thickness d exceeds a certain critical value d c [29,30]. For d > d c the alignment will get distorted for every x.…”

“…7 / OPTICS EXPRESS 6704 ral dopants are already well known circular birefringent materials. An alternative recording material is the combination of a liquid crystal (LC) and a photo-alignment film (such as, linearphoto-polymers or LPP) [5][6][7][8][9]. Circular birefringence can be obtained by mixing light-driven rotor [10] materials into LCs.…”

“…A mesogen-based polarization grating has been demonstrated to be a promising diffractive optical element, which typically exhibits insensitivity to wavelength and high diffraction efficiency (>97 %) [22,23]. Such polarization gratings are used to develop polarimeters [24] and imaging systems [23,25]. Combining two optical axis gratings can produce various interesting diffraction outcomes [23].…”
