Perioperative spleen embolization as a useful tool in laparoscopic splenectomy for simple and massive splenomegaly in children: a prospective study

Abstract: Perioperative spleen embolization performed in the OR by an interventional radiologist makes laparoscopic splenectomy a safer procedure. We propose a preoperative method for spleen measurement that is adapted to children: simple and massive splenomegaly is defined through patient body weight and a preoperative ultrasound. We conclude that spleen size is no more a limiting factor for laparoscopic splenectomy in children.

“…The HOR is widely used at many institutions, and its benefits have been reported in many fields, such as cardiac, vascular, emergency, and neurosurgery. [1][2][3][4][5] Furthermore, there are studies on the safety of intraoperative modulation in HOR in the fields of gynecology and gastrointestinal surgery. 12 In this study, IVR was performed by vascular surgeons or interventional radiologists.…”

“…A hybrid operating room (HOR) refers to an operating room that is fully equipped with medical imaging devices, such as high‐quality angiographic equipment. A HOR is widely used for cardiac, vascular, and neurosurgical procedures as it allows for precise intraoperative catheterization and navigation . The use of intraoperative interventional radiology (IVR) in the HOR has been reported in cases of severe trauma and nephrectomy; however, its use has rarely been reported in the field of gastrointestinal surgery.…”

“…Preoperative SAE makes splenectomy a safer procedure by reducing the intraoperative blood loss and the need for blood transfusion [ 9 ]. SAE before splenectomy improves the platelet count, reduces the size of the spleen and makes it softer [ 10 , 11 ].…”
