Periorbital mass with cellulitis caused by dirofilaria

Abstract: Dirofilariasis is a zoonotic disease caused by Dirofilaria, a parasite of domestic and wild animals. The disease is transmitted by inoculation of mosquitoes infected with the microfilariae during their blood meal. Accidental infection of man results in lung nodule, subcutaneous mass anywhere in the body or ocular lesion that may be subconjunctival or periorbital. The incidence of ocular dirofilariasis is on the rise in several parts of India particularly in Kerala. Here we report a case of ocular dirofilariasi… Show more

“…Another striking feature noted in the study was a case harboring concomitant mycetoma and CBM. To the best of our knowledge, to date, concurrent presence had been reported in 3 cases worldwide [ 59 61 ]. This might be due to sharing common climatic conditions for the survival and mode of transmission.…”

“…Pulmonary lesions can form from D. immitis, whereas D. repens and D. Tenuis cause ocular lesions. [ 1 ] Zooanthrophilic mosquitoes like culex, aedes, and anopheles have been regarded as vectors for dirofilariasis. [ 1 2 ] Microfilariae get transmitted from the blood of wild and domestic animals such as the dog and cat to humans by infected mosquito bites.…”

“…Human dirofilariosis cases were reported from various Indian states like Kerala (Ittyerah and Mallik, 2004), Tamil Nadu (Sathyan et al, 2006), Karnataka (Shobha et al, 2001;Karnaker et al, 2009), Assam (Nath et al, 2010) and Maharashtra (Khurana et al, 2010). The incidence is more common in areas with high mosquito density, warm climate and also in places where there is higher chance for contact with infected cats and dogs ( Joseph et al, 2011). Other species like D. repens, D. tenuis and D. ursi were also reported ( Joseph et al, 2011) as causative agent for human dirofilariasis around the world.…”
