Abstract: Our results suggest that periostin exacerbates the pathogenesis of AD through TSLP production from keratinocytes.

“…In addition, periostin also induced IL‐25 mRNA expression from NHEK. Periostin, an extracellular matrix protein produced by Th2 cytokine‐stimulated fibroblasts, is known to promote survival and proliferation of epidermal keratinocytes and induce production of thymic stromal lymphopoietin, followed by amplification of allergic skin inflammation . In fact, periostin is highly expressed in lesional skin of AD and CTCL, and correlated with disease severity .…”

“…Periostin clearly plays crucial roles in tissue repair. However, in some cases, chronic or superabundant periostin expression can accelerate pathogenesis of tumours (22,23), bronchial asthma (24,25), atopic dermatitis (26,27), polycystic kidney disease, and other fibrotic diseases (28). As recently reported, periostin promotes chronic inflammation by activating nuclear factor kappa B (NF-ĸB) signaling (26,29,30).…”

“…In addition, periostin has been implicated in atopic conditions such as dermatitis [14, 96] and rhinitis/rhinosinusitis [97]. In allergic skin inflammation, periostin induction after an initial injury contributes to the establishment of sustained chronic inflammation and tissue remodeling [14].…”
