Permeation Increases Biofilm Development in Nanofiltration Membranes Operated with Varying Feed Water Phosphorous Concentrations

Abstract: Nutrient limitation has been proposed as a biofouling control strategy for membrane systems. However, the impact of permeation on biofilm development under phosphorus-limited and enriched conditions is poorly understood. This study analyzed biofilm development in membrane fouling simulators (MFSs) with and without permeation supplied with water varying dosed phosphorus concentrations (0 and 25 μg P·L−1). The MFSs operated under permeation conditions were run at a constant flux of 15.6 L·m2·h−1 for 4.7 days. Fe… Show more

“…As a kind of pressure-driven membrane separation technology [ 6 ], nanofiltration (NF) with high permeability and selectivity for specific components has developed rapidly in recent years. Until now, NF has been widely applied in water treatment [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ], biomedicine [ 9 , 13 ], food [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ] and environmental protection [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ]. The preparation methods of NF membranes mainly include phase-transformation [ 22 ], surface coating [ 23 ], layer-by-layer self-assembly [ 24 ], surface grafting [ 25 ], co-extrusion [ 26 ] and interfacial polymerization [ 27 ].…”

“…It is a process that can selectively separate one component and reject the others in the gas or liquid streams. After more than 60 years of unremitting development, membrane-based processes with different driving forces have been invented to focus on the separation of different size of solutes (Javier et al 2022). They can be categorized as Figure 1.1 depending on the driving force.…”
