Personalized Image Recoloring for Color Vision Deficiency Compensation

Abstract: Several image recoloring methods have been proposed to compensate for the loss of contrast caused by color vision deficiency (CVD). However, these methods only work for dichromacy (a case in which one of the three types of cone cells loses its function completely), while the majority of CVD is anomalous trichromacy (another case in which one of the three types of cone cells partially loses its function). In this paper, a novel degree-adaptable recoloring algorithm is presented, which recolors images by minimiz… Show more

“…The several types and degrees of colorblindness (affecting about eight percent of males and one percent of females of European ancestry [120, 135, pp. 222-223]) have spurred the development of a further class of demographic-specific image enhancement techniques intended to simulate color vision deficiency for the normal-sighted [116,186], as well as enhancing the color perception of the colorblind [53,150,196].…”

“…In this study, qualitative and quantitative evaluation experiments were conducted, comparing the proposed method with Huang et al's method [14] and the stateof-the-art method [34]. Additionally, subjective experiment were conducted to compare the state-of-the-art method [34] with the proposed method.…”

“…To satisfy the requirement of CVD individuals' perceptual experience, color naturalness is considered in critical analysis of the recoloring methods. Quantitative evaluation system of color contrast and naturalness was widely used in evaluation [4][5][6][7]. However, generally speaking, this method can not applied in public display for the customized requirements for each CVD subjects.…”
