Abstract. Quantum spin tunneling and Kondo effect are two very different quantum phenomena that produce the same effect on quantized spins, namely, the quenching of their magnetization. However, the nature of this quenching is very different so that quantum spin tunneling and Kondo effect compete with each other. Importantly, both quantum spin tunneling and Kondo effect produce very characteristic features in the spectral function that can be measured by means of single spin scanning tunneling spectroscopy and allows to probe the crossover from one regime to the other. We model this crossover, and the resulting changes in transport, using a non-perturbative treatment of a generalized Anderson model including magnetic anisotropy that leads to quantum spin tunneling. We predict that, at zero magnetic field, integer spins can feature a split-Kondo peak driven by quantum spin tunneling.

Acidity is one central parameter in atmospheric multiphase reactions, influencing aerosol formation and its effects on climate, health, and ecosystems. Weak acids and bases, mainly CO 2 , NH 3 , and organic acids, are long considered to play a role in regulating atmospheric acidity. However, unlike strong acids and bases, their importance and influencing mechanisms in a given aerosol or cloud droplet system remain to be clarified. Here, we investigate this issue with new insights provided by recent advances in the field, in particular, the multiphase buffer theory. We show that, in general, aerosol acidity is primarily buffered by NH 3 , with a negligible contribution from CO 2 and a potential contribution from organic acids under certain conditions. For fogs, clouds, and rains, CO 2 , organic acids, and NH 3 may all provide certain buffering under higher pH levels (pH > ∼4). Despite the 10 4 to 10 7 lower abundance of NH 3 and organic weak acids, their buffering effect can still be comparable to that of CO 2 . This is because the cloud pH is at the very far end of the CO 2 multiphase buffering range. This Perspective highlights the need for more comprehensive field observations under different conditions and further studies in the interactions among organic acids, acidity, and cloud chemistry.

‘Back to the “futur”’: Mobility and immobility through English in Algeria

Based on year-long ethnographic fieldwork, this paper examines how global discourses of English as the "international language" are read, reproduced and appropriated in non-Anglophone postcolonial settings, taking Algeria as a case study. English is heralded as the "language of the future", equated with "moving on" from the colonial past towards new connections, new horizons, and new articulations of a globalnational identity. It is both a movement forward, and an attempt at reaching back to a more "authentic" (non-Francophone) past. However, those narratives are also firmly embedded within existing power hierarchies and prevailing language ideologies. Discourses and practices around English reinforce rather than challenge socio-economic stratification by rewarding elite mobilities and reproducing representations of how language indexes authenticity and belonging.
