The use of the magnetic fraction (MF) of a low-grade titanium ore (TO) and two oxidants (H 2 O 2 and NaClO), testing each one separately, were compared in photo-Fenton like systems to degrade thiabendazole (TBZ) as a model micropollutant. As far as the author's knowledge goes, this work presents for the first time the assessment of NaClO as an alternative to H 2 O 2 in heterogeneous systems, where the Fenton-type photocatalyst is a natural mineral; TO has a Mexican origin and its magnetic fraction is mainly composed of Ilmenite (47.8% w/w FeTiO 3 ). The experiments were carried out at bench scale in a solar simulator, using a batch raceway pond reactor. Oxidant and MF concentrations were optimized by a composite experimental design, which allowed to achieve 97% TBZ degradation at 15 and 30 min for NaClO and H 2 O 2 systems, respectively, when the initial concentration of TBZ was 37 µM. Pointing out that both pseudo-first order rate constants ( k ′ ),are in the order of homogeneous photo-Fenton applied to degrade TBZ; however, the time to achieve the same level of TBZ degradation is halved when NaClO is used instead of H 2 O 2 , thus the capacity of treatment plants can be increased. Furthermore, better results of mineralization (54%), DQO (76%), DBO 5 (44%) and acute toxicity (74%) removal were observed when NaClO was used as an oxidant compared to H 2 O 2 , whose values were 42, 67, 38 and 58% for the parameters aforementioned. These positive results demonstrate the feasibility of the use of NaClO as an alternative oxidant to H 2 O 2 in the heterogeneous photo Fenton like process.

High oxidation potential as well as other advantages over other tertiary wastewater treatments have led in recent years to a focus on the development of advanced oxidation processes based on sulfate radicals (SR-AOPs). These radicals can be generated from peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and persulfate (PS) through various activation methods such as catalytic, radiation or thermal activation. This review manuscript aims to provide a state-of-the-art overview of the different methods for PS and PMS activaton, as well as the different applications of this technology in the field of water and wastewater treatment. Although its most widespread application is the elimination of micropollutants, its use for the disinfection of wastewater is gaining increasing interest. In addition, the possibility of combining this technology with ultrafiltration membranes to improve the water quality and lifespan of the membranes has also been discussed. Finally, a brief economic analysis of this technology has been undertaken and the different attempts made to implement it at full-scale have been summarized. As a result, this review tries to be useful for all those people working in that area.

Using nanotechnology in asphalt paving has increased markedly to improve the asphalt characteristics and increase the road life, especially with the significant increase in traffic volumes. The present contribution evaluates the effects of ore nanoparticles namely ilmenite and bentonite on the engineering properties and performance of asphalt binder. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) micrograph was used to characterize the investigated nanomaterials. The nanoparticles were blended with asphalt binder with different percentages (0-5% for ilmenite and 0-10% for bentonite by weight of asphalt binder) to determine the appropriate mixing ratio that sustained the desired characteristics. Different tests were conducted to examine the properties of modified asphalt binder among which penetration, softening point, rotational viscosity, penetration index (PI) and ductility. The results of our study revealed an increase in softening point and rotational viscosity and decrease in binder penetration. Moreover, blending of variable amounts of nanomaterials with the asphalt binders has improved their physical properties compared with macroparticles blended and unmodified binders as indicated by the penetration index and ductility test. The most significant improvement in the modified binders was obtained by blending of 5% for two types of nanoparticles. Finally, the rut depth was measured by wheel track test for the modified asphalt mixture, with ilmenite and bentonite, to validate the obtained results. The results show that the engineering performance of asphalt produced from bitumen binder modified with nanoparticles is much better than conventional asphalt and such binder-modified asphalt is strongly recommended for use on site.
