Petrology and geochemistry of the Kruuse Fjord Gabbro Complex, East Greenland

Abstract: The Kruuse Fjord Gabbro Complex is a composite intrusion of layered gabbro and troctolite with subordinate ultramafic rocks and minor trondhjemitic bodies. It was emplaced into Archaean continental crust of East Greenland during early Tertiary rifting of Greenland from Eurasia. The work to date has identified an outer gabbro series and an inner troctolite series, and these are separated by a narrow zone of trondhjemitic intrusions. In the southeast, the partially crystallized cumulates of the gabbro ser… Show more

“…The layered mafic intrusive rocks of the Kap Edvard Holm (KEH), Nordre Aputiteq, Patulajivit, Kruuse Fjord and Imilik complexes consist mainly of olivine and oxide gabbros, with restricted ranges in mineral compositions [12][13][14][15]17,18]. During the evolution of the magma chambers, all were intruded by a primitive melt that crystallized to form wehrlite sills and plugs [12,14,15,26].…”

“…During the evolution of the magma chambers, all were intruded by a primitive melt that crystallized to form wehrlite sills and plugs [12,14,15,26]. The wehrlite intrusions of the KEH are distinct from the host layered gabbros in that the wehrlites are enriched in incompatible elements at a given Mg=Fe of olivine.…”

“…Many exposures indicate that wehrlites transgress gabbro, as evidenced by distinct semi-conformable sills and highly discordant wehrlite bodies similar to those in the Kap Edvard Holm Complex and the Kruuse Fjord Complex (Bernstein et al 1992;Tegner & Wilson, 1993;Arnason et al 1997;Brandriss & Bird, 1999). In other outcrops the contacts between gabbro and wehrlite sill bodies are gradational over 0.5 to several metres (Fig.…”

“…48 Ma old intrusion (Tegner et al, 1998) covering an area of approx. 180 km 2 is composed of gabbro, troctolite and subordinate wherlite and trondhjemite (Arnason et al, 1997b). The mineralization is discontinuous at the contact between gabbro and wherlite.…”
