Phage sensitivity and host range of Rhizobium strains isolated from root nodules of temperate legumes

Abstract: Twenty-five Rhizobium strains were isolated from root nodules of Astragalus spp. (lo), Hedysarum alpinum (7), Glycyrrhiza pallidiflora (3) and Ononis arvensis (5). The sensitivity of these strains to bacteriophages of Rhizobium loti, R. meliloti, R. galegae and R. leguminosarum was studied. Phages specific to R. loti strains were shown to induce the phage lysis of several Astragalus, Hedysarum and Ononis rhizobia. Ten R. loti strains tested for nodulation abilities on the plant hosts under investigation were a… Show more

“…Host specificities of other temperate-zone rhizobia included in group 1 have been described previously (17). The results show that the plant host ranges of these rhizobial strains of different temperate-zone geographical origins are similar and include several temperatezone legumes (Table 4), but no nodules were formed on roots of Medicago sativa, Trifolium pratense, or Galega orientalis plants inoculated with these strains.…”

“…Legume seeds were obtained from the Vavilov Plant Breeding Institute (St. Petersburg, Russia). Tests were done in tubes with surface-sterilized legume seeds as described earlier (17). Twelve seedlings of each legume were inoculated for each strain tested.…”
