Pharmacotherapy for vertigo: a current perspective

Abstract: <p>Vertigo is a symptom often encountered in routine clinical practice. Pharmacotherapy plays a vital role for treating the vertigo. Vestibular sedatives and drugs controlling nausea and vomiting constitute the important part of the pharmacotherapy for vertigo. Although there are several drugs available for controlling the vertigo, there are no definitive and universally accepted drugs available for treatment of vertigo. On the basis of the etiology, drugs with specific mechanism of action may be used to… Show more

“…However, pharmacological treatments have been associated with side effects in up to 16.9% of participants, including sedation, drowsiness and dizziness. [24][25][26][27][28] Further, while pharmacological treatments may alleviate concussive symptoms, research suggests such interventions may mask underlying neural dysfunction, 15 delay central compensatory mechanisms and contribute to delayed recovery. 10 Non-pharmacological interventions are therefore recommended commonly.…”

“…Vestibular sedatives can be prescribed for reducing the acute onset vertigo after cochlear implantation. 44 In this situation, the interaction between vestibular and visual systems plays an important role. Visual stimuli are usually able to suppress the vestibular afferences by inactivating the paretio-insular vestibular cortex, so stabilizes the equilibrium performance.…”

“…The delayed diagnosis of BPPV in children can lead to attention and behavior impairment. 44 The treatment is based on the use of the Epley's or Semont's maneuver for posterior semicircular canal BPPV and the Gufoni maneuver for horizontal semicircular canal BPPV. 45 The Epley maneuver is one of the most effective CRP for the treatment of the posterior canal BPPV.…”
