Phase Equilibria at Liquidus Temperatures in the System Cobalt Oxide-Iron Oxide-Silica in Air

Abstract: The quenching method was used to determine phase relations at liquidus temperatures in the system cobalt oxide‐iron oxide‐silica in air. The crystalline phases coexisting in equilibrium with liquids in the system are silica (SO2), olivine (Co2SiO4), a spinel solid solution ((Co,Fe)3O4), and an oxide solid solution ((Co,Fe)O) with peri‐clase‐type structure. The lowest liquidus temperature is 1313°C. Composition relations among coexisting liquid and solid phases were established in the areas where solid solution… Show more

“…The calculated two-liquid region (liquid miscibility gap) in Fig. 7 is significantly narrower than indicated by the experimental measurements [17,32]. However, it is very difficult to reproduce the experimental points for the two-liquid region since this would require an opposite curvature of the SiO 2 -liquidus isotherms.…”

“…The agreement is within experimental error limits. Several calculated phase diagrams sections of the CoO -Fe 3 O 4 -SiO 2 system in air are compared with experimental results [17,32] in Fig. 8.…”

“…A phase diagram of a CoFe 2 O 4 Co 3 O 4 system, has been reported by Robin,82) Masse and Muan. 83) They found a miscibility gap (spinodal curve) in the spinel region. The phase diagram was revised; and the kinetics of spinodal decomposition was examined by Takahashi et al 84)87) In their work, the samples were aged for from 200 h to 36 days at 500700°C.…”
