Phase Identification in a Series of Liquid Crystalline TPP Polyethers and Copolyethers Having Highly Ordered Mesophase Structure. 5. Solid State 13C NMR Characterization of Motion and Conformations of Methylene and Mesogen Groups in Different Mesophases of TPP(n = 12 and 15)

Abstract: Two liquid crystalline polyethers based on 1-(4-hydroxy-4‘-biphenylyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane and 1,12-dibromododecane and 1,15-dibromopentadecane [TPP(n = 12 and 15)] have been characterized to examine the molecular motion and conformations of the methylene units and mesogenic groups using solid state 13C NMR. The methylene conformations were studied as a function of temperature by the γ-gauche effect in the 13C NMR chemical shift, which depends largely on the C−C conformation under the condition of magic… Show more

“…One of the advantages of solid-state 13 C NMR is that it can give a quantitative population estimate of the ordered (alltrans) and disordered (mixture of trans and gauche) alkyl tail conformations. 1,36,[44][45][46][47][48] Figs. 8a and 8b show CP/MASS/DD and Bloch decay spectra of C12PhBA during heating at different temperatures, respectively.…”

“…Furthermore, TPP( m = 12) possesses two crystalline phases, K 1 and K 2 , which do not exist in TPP( n = 7). The transition thermodynamic properties (temperatures and heats of transitions) are also different in these TPPs. Molecular dynamics in different phases, surface-induced phase structures, , and structural and morphological development in TPPs 8,9 have also been investigated.…”

“…These solid-state 13 C NMR experiments provided information on the fraction of ordered (all-trans) and disordered (mixture of trans and gauche) conformations in the alkyl chains and the mobility of each carbon in a-6TTF12 in different phases at various temperatures. [61][62][63][64][65] These results show that the alkyl chains are frozen in the amorphous state after the high temperature transition and are nearly crystalline (90% trans conformation) at the low temperature transition. By combination of DSC (Figure 2), 1D WAXD (Figure 3), and solid-state 13 C NMR ( Figures S2 and S3 in the Supporting Information) results, it can be concluded that a-6TTF12 exhibited two ordered phases below T i .…”
