Phaseolin, a Protein from the Seed of Phaseolus vulgaris, Has Antioxidant, Antigenotoxic, and Chemopreventive Properties

Abstract: The present report was designed to determine the antioxidant and antigenotoxic effects of phaseolin (isolated from Phaseolus vulgaris) against mouse colon and liver damage induced by azoxymethane (AOM) and its colon chemopreventive effect. Eight groups with 12 mice each were utilized for an eight-week experiment: the control group was intragastrically (ig) administered 0.9% saline solution; the positive control group was intraperitoneally (ip) injected with 7.5 mg/kg AOM twice a week (weeks three and four of t… Show more

“…Besides improving general gut health in bowel disease, the effect on mucosal damage may indicate a chemopreventive potential of common bean ingredients in colon cancer. To support this conjecture, we may refer to the works of García-Cordero et al (2021), Luna-Vital, ) and Luna-Vital, Ramírez-Jiménez et al (2017), and Wang et al (2021 who found that the applications of the common bean bioactive proteins such as phaseolin, lectins, and bioactive peptides may positively affect some health parameters such as survival rate and decrease of disease activity index. Nonetheless, the literature is scarce for in vivo experimentation.…”

“…КЗ здійснює сприятливий вплив на ССЗ, які пов'язані з окисним стресом [41,42]. Також іn vivo було продемонстровано сильний антиоксидантний, антигенотоксичний і хіміопрофілактичний потенціал фазеоліну, який виділяють із насіння КЗ [43].…”

“…However, a recent meta-analysis on common beans and good health in humans suggests that cancer studies are underdeveloped, and that more in-depth studies are necessary [13]. Despite this, possible antitumoral activity has been demonstrated in animal models, in which bean administration reduced the incidence of the colon [14][15][16][17][18] and breast cancer [19,20]. In addition, by using different types of bean extracts, several researchers demonstrated that beans exert anti-proliferative, anti-inflammatory, and pro-apoptotic activities in different types of cancer cells [21][22][23][24].…”
