Compounds detection and inhibition activity of chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts of Schizophyllum commune on some cancer cell types. Biodiversitas 21: 5865-5871. Schizophyllum commune Fr.is a potential fungus utilized as a drug, including a cancer drug expectant. In Indonesia, the fungus' capability to suppress the growth of certain types of cancer cells has not been widely reported. The purposes of this study were (i) to determine the bioactive compound group from S. commune using organic solvents chloroform and ethyl acetate, (ii) to determine the IC50 values of S. commune bioactive compounds using cancer cell lines HeLa, MCF7, T47D and WiDr, (iii) to find out the mechanism of apoptosis. The research was carried out experimentally using a pure culture of four types of cancer cell lines. Anticancer activity test was conducted by a cytotoxic test using MTT [3- (4,5- dimethylthiazol -2-yl) -2.5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide], and apoptosis test. Data analysis was performed with linear regression analysis, and the apoptosis test was analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the bioactive compounds produced by S. commune are alkaloids, terpenoids, and flavonoids. S. commune bioactive compounds potentially inhibit the four cancer cell lines used with IC50 values ranging from 5.44 to 420.48 ug/mL. Best result was obtained from S. commune extract of chloroform in T47D cells with IC50 = 5.44 ug/mL and are able to induce apoptosis.

Interest in edible and medicinal macrofungi is millennial in terms of their uses in health and food products in Central Asia, while interest in inedible and medicinal macrofungi has grown in popularity in recent years. Edible and inedible medicinal basidiomycetes were collected during field surveys from different regions of Uzbekistan. The morphological characters and similarity assessment of rDNA-Internal Transcribed Spacer sequence data were used to measure diversity and habitat associations. A number of 17 species of medicinal macrofungi of ethnomycological and medicinal interest was found associated with 23 species of trees and shrubs belonging to 11 families and 14 genera. Polyporaceae and Hymenochaetaceae were represented by the highest number of species followed by Ganodermataceae, Fomitopsidaceae, Auriculariaceae, Cerrenaceae, Grifolaceae, Phanerochaetaceae, Laetiporaceae, Schizophyllaceae, and Stereaceae. The highest number of medicinal basidiomycete species was reported in the following host genera: Acer, Betula, Celtis, Crataegus, Juglans, Juniperus, Lonicera, Malus, Morus, Platanus, Populus, Prunus, Quercus, and Salix. An updated list of edible and inedible medicinal mushrooms identified in Uzbekistan, their morphological characteristics, and phylogenetic placement are given for the first time. Information is provided on their uses in traditional and modern medicine. Their bioactive compounds and extracts can be applied as medicines, as well as food and cosmetic ingredients.

The tea of aerial parts of Smilax larvata Griseb. (Smilacaceae) has been ethnopharmacologically used in Southern Brazil due to its anti-inflammatory action. In this study, ethanolic and organic extracts from aerial parts of S. larvata were phytochemically and pharmacologically characterized. The phytochemical analysis of EtOAc extract of S. larvata revealed the presence of three flavonoids, drabanemoroside, kaempferol 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1→2)-α-L-rhamnopyranoside, and kaempferol, the first two being isolated for the first time in this genus, two phenolic compounds p-hydroxybenzoic acid and p-coumaric acid, and alkaloids. In vitro assays demonstrated a potential antioxidant property of SLG. The treatment with SLG induced a significant reduction of the formalin-evoked flinches in rats, an effect reversed by opioid antagonist naloxone. Treatment with SLG also induced a significant increase in the hot plate latency and a decrease of intestinal motility by 45%. No effect was observed over nociceptive responses induced by a TRPA1 agonist mustard oil or over acetic acid-induced writhing in mice. Together, our data suggested that SLG has an in vivo antinociceptive effect, which seems to be associated with the opioid system activation. These findings support previous claims of medical use of Smilax larvata in the treatment of pain conditions.
