Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of levofloxacin- and moxifloxacin-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical isolates in southern China

Abstract: Background: Levofloxacin (LVX) and Moxifloxacin (MXF) are the cornerstones for treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). China is one of the highest MDR-and fluoroquinolones (FQ)resistant TB burdens countries. DNA gyrase encoded by gyr genes is the main target of FQ in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). The prevalence and molecular characterization of LVX-and MXF-resistant MTB strains from southern China were examined in this study. Methods: Drug susceptibility testing (DST) of 400 MTB clinical iso… Show more

“…A study from mid-East of China showed that 37% of fluoroquinolone resistance events were in MDR M. tuberculosis isolates [ 10 ]. And a total of 76% LFX resistance and 73% MFX resistance MTB isolates were identified in a study from southern China [ 11 ]. Another report from Shanghai revealed that among FQ-resistant M. tuberculosis strains, 44% were multidrug-resistant isolates [ 12 ].…”

“…Pulmonary tuberculosis, also known as the white plague, is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is mainly transmitted through the respiratory tract (1)(2)(3)(4). According to the World Health Organization, pulmonary tuberculosis affects tens of millions of people worldwide each year, and the death toll can reach 3 million annually, making pulmonary tuberculosis one of the infectious diseases with the highest incidence and mortality worldwide, with China being one of the countries with the highest incidence.…”
