Phenyl Isocyanate Method for Determination of Hydroxyl Equivalent Weights of Polyoxyalkylene Compounds.

Abstract: A stannous octoate catalyzed phenyl isocyanate method for the determination of the hydroxyl equivalent weight of polyoxyalkylene compounds is described. The method is relatively free from side reactions because stannous octoate is a relatively selective catalyst for the alcoholisocyanate reaction. The method is applicable to most hydroxyl compounds including sterically hindered and tertiary alcohols. Aromatic hydroxyl compounds are an exception and cannot be determined. Reaction times in the range of 30 to 40 … Show more

“…Polyesters (13), polyamides (13), and polyurethanes (16) have been subjected to this analysis. Polyethers have been analyzed by hydroxyl-group titrations similar to those used for polyesters or by reaction with excess phenyl isocyanate followed by reaction with excess di-n-butylamine; the latter was backtitrated with perchloric acid (17). Nonaqueous titrations (18) have been used to characterize polysulfones with Mn values of up to 25,000.…”
