“…6 As shown in Figure 2, we have observed five distinct lines (I 1 -I 5 ) at 269.6, 301.9, 337.5, 363.8, and 613.5 cm −1 , and a wide shoulder in the range of 400-545 cm −1 . The lines (I 1 -I 5 ) are assigned as the T g + E g , E g , el (C 3i ), T g + A g , and T g , respectively; the observed line I 3, at 337.5 cm −1 is referred to as a Stark level assignment for Yb 3+ ion in C 3i site.…”

“…In analogy with the previously reported modes for the hexagonal phases, 27 the mode at ∼484.8 may be identified as the A 1g and the mode at 512.6 cm −1 may be assigned to the E g mode. It may be pertinent to point out here that according to Shaack and Koningston, 6 Yb 2 O 3 is known to behave differently from all other rare earth sesquioxides where the Raman lines are considerably broadened. This observation is consistent with the present result.…”

“…The most informative papers we found, in order of the increasing ionic radius of the rare earth, are for Sc-Refs. 12 11,12,15,22,26,27,31 only in few of them 11,12,27 polarized Raman spectra are shown. In some works, the symmetry of the phonon modes, giving rise to the observed peaks in the Raman spectra of Sc 2 3 11,15,27 this assignment is supported by the published experimental data.…”
