Phonon driven charge dynamics in polycrystalline acetylsalicylic acid mapped by ultrafast x-ray diffraction

Abstract: The coupled lattice and charge dynamics induced by phonon excitation in polycrystalline acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) are mapped by femtosecond x-ray powder diffraction. The hybrid-mode character of the 0.9 ± 0.1 THz methyl rotation in the aspirin molecules is evident from collective charge relocations over distances of some 100 pm, much larger than the sub-picometer nuclear displacements. Oscillatory charge relocations around the methyl group generate a torque on the latter, thus coupling electronic and nucl… Show more

“…The interplay of soft-mode excitations and changes of electronic charge density has been revealed in femtosecond x-ray diffraction experiments following the transient charge densities in space and time. 85,86 Much less is known on the intrinsic nonlinear response of soft modes, 87 in particular in molecular materials. In the following, we discuss results from 2D-THz spectroscopy which give detailed insight in soft mode nonlinearities in aspirin crystals.…”

“…Therefore, use of an appropriate X-ray optic, which collects and (quasi-)collimates the radiation is mandatory to enable this approach [18][19][20][21][22][23] . Successful application of ultrafast Debye-Scherrer diffraction at a laser-plasma based X-ray source has been recently demonstrated by measuring transient changes of electron density for thick (10 -100 µm) powder samples of ionic crystals 21,24,25 .…”

“…The advent of compact table-top laser-driven pulsed X-ray sources (Korn et al, 2002;Zamponi et al, 2009;Uhlig et al, 2013) has enabled significant progress in time-resolved studies (Rischel et al, 1997;Rousse et al, 2001;Hauf et al, 2019;Lu et al, 2020) using mid-to high-power laser systems (e.g. Batysta et al, 2016).…”
