Photobiomodulation Therapy on the Guided Bone Regeneration Process in Defects Filled by Biphasic Calcium Phosphate Associated with Fibrin Biopolymer

Abstract: The aim is to evaluate the effects of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) on the guided bone regeneration process (GBR) in defects in the calvaria of rats filled with biphasic calcium phosphate associated with fibrin biopolymer. Thirty male Wistar rats were randomly separated: BMG (n = 10), defects filled with biomaterial and covered by membrane; BFMG (n = 10), biomaterial and fibrin biopolymer covered by membrane; and BFMLG (n = 10), biomaterial and fibrin biopolymer covered by membrane and biostimulated with P… Show more

“…In the 42-day postoperative period, the BC-PBM and XS-PBM groups had a higher percentage of new bone deposition, with a significant difference in relation to the groups with the same treatment (11.22 ± 2.10 and 9.47 ± 1.45, respectively) and without PBM (BC 7.06 ± 1.10 and XS 5.82 ± 0.73, respectively). This fact occurs, among several biomodulatory benefits of LLLT, through the improvement in the lamellar organization of collagen fibers, increased bone cellularity, decreased inflammatory infiltrate and, thus, generate conditions for higher averages of neoformed bone [29,42,[67][68][69][70].…”

“…All animals in groups BC-PBM and XS-PBM were submitted to treatment with laser GaAlAs (gallium-aluminumarsenide, Ibramed Laserpulse TM , Amparo, SP, Brazil). The PBM protocol, used for tissue repair in previous experiments [20,29,[40][41][42][43][44], is described in Table 1.…”

“…This bioactive effect has also been demonstrated for cells and molecules intentionally incorporated into the membrane and/or implanted into the underlying defect, and may be combined with bone graft materials. Within this context, synthetic materials and natural derivatives have been used in clinical practice as membranes for GBR [ 12 , 13 , 14 ].…”

“…Bone repair remains a major challenge, therefore, reconstructive therapies are needed to assist the healing process. Autologous bone graft is the main approach for bone repair and regeneration, due to its greater osteogenic capacity and inherent biocompatibility [ 2 , 3 ]. However, the limitation of supply and surgical morbidity at the donor site such as infections and paresthesia are related to limited use of autologous bone graft [ 4 , 5 ].…”
