Photoelectric quantitative evaluation of argon laser treatment of port wine stains

Abstract: Sixty patients with port wine stains were treated with the argon laser and graded visually into four subjective categories for changes in skin colour. For objective quantitative evaluation a photoelectric colorimeter was used. Reproducible definition of the lightness of the lesions into numbers was obtained. Differentials in lightness between normal contralateral skin and the port wine stain before and after treatment were quantified for each individual. The objective evaluation revealed a statistically signif… Show more

“…o Discussion Both instruments used in this study are new, fully portable, easy to operate and offer objective color values quickly. Recent studies actually report the usefulness of a tristimulus colorimeter in the study of the quantitative evaluation of ultraviolet(UV)-induced erythe ma and tanning [1,5,6], intensity of irritant or allergic dermatitis [2,4], skin blanching induced by topical corticosteroid [7,8] and argon laser treatment of port wine stains [9].…”

“…The shape of the necrotic area was similar on all sections of all biopsies (Figs. [4][5][6][7][8]. Because of the different laser parameters, the extent varied accordingly.…”

“…In dermatology the description of the color of a lesion is of great importance [Neumann et al, 1991]. However, visual evaluation of erythemal intensity is subjective and less precise, especially regarding the comparison between the intensities of developed erythema [Nose and Tsurumi, 1993].…”
