Photoreceptor Cell Development Regulation

Abstract: Photoreceptors, the specialised cells that signal visual information, evolved ∼600 million years ago, well before the divergence of vertebrates and invertebrates. Metazoan organisms have since evolved variant developmental circuitries that involve specific extrinsic and intrinsic factors to form distinct types of photoreceptor cells. Owing to studies on animal models and human ocular anomalies, the characterisation of several regulatory genes that are essential for mammalian photoreceptor development, namely … Show more

“…Photoreceptor development, including that of the cones and their opsin expression, has been intensively studied in a number of vertebrate model species. There are a number of events and factors determining the differentiation of photoreceptor precursors into rods or cones (see Inherited defects in S cones and pigments section; reviews: Livesey & Cepko, 2001 ;Adler & Raymond, 2008 ;Lachke et al, 2010 ;Nasonkin et al, 2010 ;Swaroop et al, 2010 ). Photoreceptor genesis and functional maturation occur over a relatively long time window, producing partly overlapping waves of cone and rod differentiation.…”
