Photostability studies on gemifloxacin and lomefloxacin in bulk powder and dosage forms

Abstract: KEYWORDSThe photostability of gemifloxacin mesylate (GFLX) and lomefloxacin hydrochloride (LFLX) antibacterial agents in dilute aqueous solutions (bulk powder and dosage form) was studied by applying the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) recommended conditions. The photodegradation processes were monitored by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and quantified by HPLC. The structures of degradation products in the aqueous solution have been deduced from LC-MS/MS. The GFLX and LFLX photodegradation kinetic ra… Show more

“…The fluoroquinolone lomefloxacin served as a model compound since this substance was found in various waters in previous studies and also in the nearby River Erft in the course of this study [12,13]. Its irradiation-induced transformation has been described earlier [14,15]. Yet, systematic comparative investigation of near and far ultraviolet (UVA and UVC) irradiation in the presence and absence of hydrogen peroxide and titanium dioxide has not been undertaken.…”

“…In the literature, different analytical methods have been reported for its determination, including spectrophotometry, [5][6][7] spectrofluorimetry, [8][9][10] high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC), [11][12][13][14] high performance layer chromatography (HPLC)-ultraviolet (UV), [15][16][17][18] and liquid chromatography (LC)-mass spectrometry. 19,20 Ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC), introduced in 2004, proved to be more efficient than HPLC in many aspects such as resolution, sensitivity, and consuming much smaller amounts of solvents.…”
