Objective: to explore the potentialities of the Photovoice methodology to stimulate critical thinking on Social Determinants of Health. Method: an exploratory and descriptive study with a qualitative approach, using different steps of the Photovoice methodology. Nursing students obtained photographs in their community, showing Social Determinants of Health, analyzed and classified the photographs, and exposed the results in the Nursing school. The students answered a questionnaire writing their perceptions. The data collected from the questionnaires were qualitatively analyzed. Results: 91 students participated in the study. Two main categories emerged from the data: Photovoice is a good methodology to stimulate critical thinking on Social Determinants of Health, and Photovoice is a good methodology to stimulate other skills (expressing beliefs and perceptions, stimulating creativity, developing research skills, strengthening ties with colleagues, and attracting attention). Conclusion: we explore the potentialities of the Photovoice methodology. It can be an original, simple and economical tool to stimulate critical thinking on Social Determinants of Health, and to stimulate other skills. Photovoice can be considered in teaching about aspects related to health/care in Nursing students, in order to promote critical thinking of future agents for a change in health.

This research explored and described the experiences of Australia's First Nations expectant fathers as they supported their partners during childbirth. A descriptive, interpretive approach used purposive recruitment to the point of data saturation. Five participants were interviewed within 4 days of supporting their partners during childbirth. Interview data were thematically analyzed, and five themes emerged. Three themes were consistent with findings from non–First Nations fathers. Two new themes related to changes in childbearing traditions, “we show affection in different way” and staff support strategies, “educate dads by telling stories about birth”; will be closely examined in this article. This research identified the existence of a new generation of First Nations fathers in Central Australia wishing to guide and support their partners in their journey to parenthood. The development of support programs, responsive to their unique ways of knowing and learning style, will ensure that their needs are optimally met.

This article deals with the opportunities and limitations of photography as a tool in participatory development research and cooperation. After the definitions and reflections on the basic terms and the introduction of the “participatory toolbox,” different possible uses of photography are discussed: photography grants access, as it endows the photographer with a specific role. The photographer gives meaning to what he or she captures, facilitating an emic perspective for the recipient. Photo documentation provides a basis for discussion and comparison and promotes the feeling of “ownership.” But also staged photography can be significant because of the creative and at the same time world-related and thus solution-oriented approach. Furthermore, photography has therapeutic potential, e.g. when it comes to identity work or mediating between different positions. However, it should be mentioned that photography has different meanings depending on the cultural context and should always be used against this background.
