Photovoltaic‐based grid‐connected transformer‐less three‐phase cascaded diode‐clamped multilevel inverter with reduced leakage current

Abstract: A photovoltaic (PV) transformer‐less grid‐connected cascaded diode‐clamped half‐bridge multilevel inverter (MLI) is presented in this paper. Compared with the conventional cascaded H‐bridge (CHB) multilevel inverter, the projected inverter permits connection of double the DC‐link voltage and hence enhances its rating. The most common problem the PV‐based transformer‐less grid‐connected CHB MLI system faces is the flow of leakage currents created by parasitic capacitances due to the disparity in common‐mode vol… Show more

“…To resolve the problem of LC, a new topology is proposed in Tofigh Azary et al 10 using the soft switching technique, and another topology based on the diode clamping method is proposed. 11 Moreover, both topologies employ a greater number of power switches which affect efficiency and reliability. An efficient topology for renewable energy integration is proposed in other studies 12,13 based on a neutral point clamped (NPC) structure.…”

“…PV systems may also be used without a transformer, which improves their efficiency and makes the whole system lighter, smaller, and easier to install. However, a transformerless grid‐connected PV system creates a common‐mode resonant circuit including the filter, the inverter, the grid impedance, and the PV parasitic capacitance 4,5 …”

“…However, a transformerless grid-connected PV system creates a common-mode resonant circuit including the filter, the inverter, the grid impedance, and the PV parasitic capacitance. 4,5 This common mode generates a leakage current that circulates through parasitic. Leakage current may have consequences on security issues; for instance, it is responsible for higher current harmonics, higher losses, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues.…”
