Phthalimide‐derived strigolactone mimics as germinating agents for seeds of parasitic weeds

Abstract: The synthesis was carried out in a few steps and provided the target compounds in good yields. The compounds tested showed great selectivity, and low EC values were obtained for structures that were simpler than GR24. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…As a consequence, strigolactone mimics are preferred over natural strigolactones. Strigolactams and phthalimide derivatives are examples of mimics that strongly stimulate O. cumana , O. minor , P. ramosa and P. aegyptiaca germination . Other families of compounds, such as benzoxazinoids, sesquiterpene lactones, alkaloids, flavonoids or steroids, stimulate parasitic plant germination.…”

“…However, unlike Nijmegen-1, CTL compounds do not contain a D ring and certainly are not a hydrolysable substrate. Interestingly, other compounds built on phthalimide lactone scaffolds but lacking enol-ether linkages have good selectivity activity on various Orobanche and Philibanche species 59 . Finally, a screen for novel germination agonists developed specifically around the activation of the AtHTL/KAI2 receptor with one of its protein partners, MORE AXILLARY GROWTH2 (MAX2), identified more structurally unrelated compounds that have activity in Striga hermonthica germination assays ( Figure 4) 57 .…”

“…N ‐Substituted phthalimides with similar properties to gibberellins have been reported as germination stimulants, and structurally related cotylimides are linked to the endogenous production of strigolactones . In a recent study, phthalimide‐derived strigolactone mimics induced broomrape germination.…”

“…Despite the strong biological activity of natural germination stimulants, their commercial use for suicidal germination strategies is limited by the current inability to mass‐produce these compounds and their low stability in the soil. In order to increase the applicability of these compounds, it is necessary to develop synthetic analogs and mimics that would provide a more feasible alternative for seed bank control . Strigolactones are plant hormones that have been identified as one of the main stimulators of the germination of seeds of parasitic weeds .…”
