The large-scale biomass production is an essential step in the biotechnological applications of microalgae. Coccomyxa onubensis is an acidophilic microalga isolated from the highly acidic waters of Río Tinto (province of Huelva, Spain) and has been shown to accumulate a high concentration of lutein (9.7 mg g−1dw), a valuable antioxidant, when grown at laboratory-scale. A productivity of 0.14 g L−1 d−1 was obtained by growing the microalga under outdoor conditions in an 800 L tubular photobioreactor. The results show a stable biomass production for at least one month and with a lutein content of 10 mg g−1dw, at pH values in the range 2.5–3.0 and temperature in the range 10–25 °C. Culture density, temperature, and CO2 availability in highly acidic medium are rate-limiting conditions for the microalgal growth. These aspects are discussed in this paper in order to improve the outdoor culture conditions for competitive applications of C. onubensis.

Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms that use sunlight as an energy source, and convert water, carbon dioxide, and inorganic salts into algal biomass. The isolation and selection of microalgae, which allow one to obtain large amounts of biomass and valuable compounds, is a prerequisite for their successful industrial production. This work provides an overview of extremophile algae, where their ability to grow under harsh conditions and the corresponding accumulation of metabolites are addressed. Emphasis is placed on the high‐value products of some prominent algae. Moreover, the most recent applications of these microorganisms and their potential exploitation in the context of astrobiology are taken into account.

Photoautotrophic algal cultivation is challenging due to the shadowing effect produced by an increase in the number of cells; under such circumstances, mixotrophic growth might be an efficient alternative. We grew cultures of the autochthonous acidotolerant microalga Elliptochloris sp. on crude technical glycerin or glucose bubbled with either only air or air containing 2.5 % (v/v) CO2. We found that CO2 strongly influenced the production of Elliptochloris sp., as higher growth occurred in mixotrophy with CO2-enriched air compared to that with only air. Mixotrophy with CO2-enriched air allowed to reach higher biomass productivities and facilitated an increase in the relative abundance of saturated fatty acids. Nevertheless, mixotrophy with only air resulted in an increase of both saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, but biomass productivities were lower. These results, along with the limited biological contamination facilitated by low pH, suggest that this microalga might be attractive for large-scale production within the circular economy model.
