Phylogenetic perspectives on basidiomycete systematics: evidence from the 18S rRNA gene

Abstract: Basidiomycete systematics has a history of dramatic change with the introduction of new forms of information. We present a new class level taxonomy for basidiomycetes consisting of the Urediniomycetes emend., Ustilaginomycetes, and Hymenomycetes. The primary source of characters for this analysis is the 18S rRNA gene. Other characters such as cellular carbohydrate composition, major ubiquinone system, 5S rRNA sequence, basidium morphology, and septum and spindle pole body ultrastructure are considered. Compari… Show more

“…These major clades coincided with Polyporoid, Euagarics, Bolete, Russuloid, Thelephoroid, Hymenochaetoid, Cantharelloid and Gomphoid-phalloid clades. This classification was not congruent with Swann and Taylor (1995)'s findings. Recently Homobasidiomycetes was shown to be polyphyletic (Binder et al, 2005;Moncalvo et al, 2006).…”

“…ADVANCE OF PHYLOGENETIC SYSTEMATICS OF BASIDIOMYCOTA AND AGARICOMY-COTINA Swann and Taylor (1993) conducted pioneering studies on the phylogeny of Basidiomycota by sequencing and analyzing the 18S rRNA gene of 19 species. They increased the number of species to 54 using the same gene (Swann and Taylor, 1995). Both publications revealed 3 major groups: Hymenomycetes, Ustilaginomycetes and Urediniomycetes in Basidiomycota.…”

“…On the basis of sequence analysis of the small-subunit rDNA, Swann & Taylor (1995c) recommended two subclasses among the Hymenomycetes : (1) the Hymenomycetidae, containing the non-yeast-like macrofungi, including the mushrooms and puffballs ; and (2) the Tremellomycetidae. As a result of our analysis of the D1\D2 region, the hymenomycetous yeasts are presented in four major clades of the Tremellomycetidae (Fig.…”
