Physical activity change during adolescence: a systematic review and a pooled analysis

Abstract: The decline of PA during adolescence is a consistent finding in the literature. Differences between boys and girls were observed and should be explored in future studies. Interventions that attempt to attenuate the PA decline, even without an increase in PA levels, could be considered as effective.

“…Although certain differences in type of physical exercise can be found, the studies available in the literature agree that this practice tends to be negatively associated with age, especially beginning in the last years of adolescence 15,16 . Although several studies have sought to identify the reasons for such decrease, the proportion of contribution of biological and environmental factors and their interaction to the reduction in physical activity with age remain unclear.…”

“…The steeper and earlier age-dependent decrease in physical activity 35 and the relatively lower muscle mass limit activity energy expenditure in adolescent females. In addition, girls show relatively less energy consuming hyperactive and impulsive behavior in relation to inattentive behavior than boys.…”

“…could this be generalized to adolescent females? In this sense, it is important to mention that physical activity levels tend to decline as children get older [12,13], particularly during adolescence [22] and above all among females [23]. Furthermore, there is a worldwide prevalence of low physical activity levels in adolescents, also mainly among females [24].…”
