Based on previous studies, it has been found that goji berry (GB), popularly known as a 'miracle fruit', has excellent antioxidant potential and can be used in the treatment of skin disorders associated with ageing. This study aimed to incorporate GB into a structured cosmetic in order to optimise its penetration. Stability studies of the formulation, determination of the antioxidant activity of the extract and of the formulation, rheological measurements, SAXS, polarised light microscopy and bioadhesion analyses were performed. The results indicated the antioxidant activity of the extract, which can be incorporated into an emulsified cosmetic formulation. The emulsified formulation containing the extract remained stable, even after being submitted to thermal and luminous stresses for 30 days. In addition, rheological tests revealed that the addition of the GB soft extract reduced the viscosity of the formulation, increasing thixotropy and deformation. These systems were characterised by SAXS as a lamellar phase, which was confirmed by polarised light microscopy. These highly organised structures indicate their excellent stability. In vitro bioadhesion experiments revealed that these formulations exhibited skin adhesion strength statistically similar to commercial anti-ageing formulation. These results suggest that this formulation has excellent potential to be used as a topical treatment for ageing.

Background: Acne is a skin disease characterized by chronic inflammation in the polisebasea that often occurs in adolescence. Utilization of the black mulberry fruit with a high phenolic is one alternative for the treatment of acne. Aims and Objectives: The aims of this research are to develop and test a peel-off mask gel prepared from black mulberries (Morus nigra) extracts, which has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes. Materials and Methods: Black mulberry fruit was extracted with the maceration method by using ethanol (96%). Then, the antibacterial activity of the extract was determined by the disc-diffusion method, while the mean inhibitory concentration (MIC) and mean bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined by the microdilution method. Then, the extract was formulated into the base of the peel-off mask gel containing variations in concentration of polyvinyl alcohol (7%, 9%, and 10%) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (2% and 2.5%). The formulations prepared were evaluated for their physical properties, including organoleptic behavior, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, and drying time. Irritation tests were performed, and antibacterial activity of the formulation was also assessed. Results: The results showed that the black mulberry fruit extract has antibacterial activity with MIC value of 2.5% against S. epidermidis and P. acnes, while MBC values were 2.5% and 5%, respectively. Formulations with the best results of physical evaluation were obtained for the formula containing polyvinyl alcohol at 7% and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose at 2.5%. The antibacterial activity of the peel-off mask gel formulation from black mulberries (M. nigra) extract occurs with 3 × MIC and produce inhibition zone 6.11 ± 3.2 mm against S. epidermidis and 5.43 ± 0.6 mm against P. acnes. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the peel-off mask gel prepared from black mulberry (M. nigra) fruit extract is effective as well as safe to be used as a topical preparation.

Green Clay and Aloe Vera Peel-Off Facial Masks: Response Surface Methodology Applied to the Formulation Design

Abstract. This article describes the optimization of a peel-off facial mask formulation. An investigation was carried out on the parameters of the formulation that most affect the desirable characteristics of peeloff facial masks. Cereal alcohol had a significant effect on the drying time at concentrations of 1-12% (w/ w). The applicability of the evaluated formulations was influenced by both carbomer (0-2.4%; w/w) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA; 2.5-17.5%; w/w) content due to their ability to alter the formulation viscosity. Inverse concentrations of carbomer and PVA led to formulations with optimum viscosity for facial application. Film-forming performance was influenced only by the PVA concentration, achieving maximum levels at concentrations of around 11% (w/w). The optimized formulation, determined mathematically, contained 13% (w/w) PVA and 10% (w/w) cereal alcohol with no addition of carbomer. This formulation provided high levels of applicability and film-forming performance, the lowest drying time possible and excellent homogeneity of the green clay particles and aloe vera before and after drying. The preliminary stability study indicated that the optimized formulation is stable under normal storage conditions. The microbiological stability evaluation indicated that the preservative was efficient in terms of avoiding microbial growth. RSM was shown to be a useful statistical tool for the determination of the behavior of different compounds and their concentrations for the responses studied, allowing the investigation of the optimum conditions for the production of green clay and aloe vera peel-off facial masks.
