Physical parameters of 15 intermediate-age LMC clusters from modelling of HST colour–magnitude diagrams

Abstract: Aims. We analyzed HST/WFPC2 colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of 15 populous Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) stellar clusters with ages between ∼0.3 Gyr and ∼3 Gyr. These (V, B − V) CMDs are photometrically homogeneous and typically reach V ∼ 22. Accurate and self-consistent physical parameters (age, metallicity, distance modulus and reddening) were extracted for each cluster by comparing the observed CMDs with synthetic ones. Methods. These determinations involved simultaneous statistical comparisons of the main-… Show more

“…This method was extensively explained in previous works of our group, where it was applied to LMC clusters observed with HST/WFPC2 (Kerber et al 2002(Kerber et al , 2007Kerber & Santiago 2005) and Galactic open clusters from 2MASS (Alves et al 2012). In Paper I we analysed the CMDs of five SMC stellar clusters observed with SOAR/SOI using the same setup as in this paper.…”

“…Since then, the "synthetic CMD method" has been widely used on simple stellar populations (Sandrelli et al 1999;Carraro et al 2002;Subramaniam et al 2005;Singh Kalirai 2006;Kerber et al 2007;Girardi et al 2009;Cignoni et al 2011;Donati et al 2014, etc.). An expansion of the method can be found applied with little adjustments to the recovery of SFHs of nearby galaxies (Ferraro et al 1989;Tosi et al 1991;Tolstoy & Saha 1996;Hernandez et al 1999;Dolphin 2002;Frayn & Gilmore 2002;Aparicio & Hidalgo 2009;Small et al 2013) 15 .…”

“…Such clusters are found mainly in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC;Mackey & Broby Nielsen 2007; Mackey et al 2008;Milone et al 2009;Piatti 2013;Kerber et al 2007;Rubele et al 2011), and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC; Girardi et al 2009Girardi et al , 2013. There has been a long history of explanation for such special CMDs.…”
