Physician Scheduling for Continuity: An Application in Pediatric Intensive Care

Abstract: A physician schedule that maximizes continuity (i.e., reduces instances of patients being treated by multiple physicians) could improve the efficiency of handoffs—the transfer of patients from the care of one physician to another. We present a modeling and solution approach for assigning physicians to service and call shifts in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston (Children’s). We developed the handoff continuity score (HCS) for measuring the continuity of a … Show more

“…In addition [123] and [130] had proposed a mix integer linear programming for solving this problem. In addition [131] studied the scheduling of physicians in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) too. On the other hand [77] integrated physicians and surgery scheduling for the purpose of solving operating room scheduling problems by using mix integer linear programming.…”

“…Their goal is to minimize hand-offs, as transferring of patient information from one physician to another presents a greater risk of miscommunication and mistakes. Smalley et al [22] maximizes continuity in a pediatric intensive care unit by introducing a handoff continuity score (HCS) into their physician scheduling problem. The value of HCS helps in measuring the continuity of a schedule.…”

“…Em [7] o objetivo é maximizar a continuidade de tratamento de um paciente com o mesmo médico, pois a transferência de um paciente para médicos diferentes pode prejudicar seu tratamento. O autor apresenta um modelo e solução para maximizar a continuidade, aplicado a unidade de terapia intensiva pediátrica do hospital "Children's Healthcare" de Atlanta, Estados Unidos.…”
