Physicochemical characteristics, nutritional composition, and phytochemical profiles of nine Algerian date palm fruit (Phoenix dactyliferaL.) varieties

Abstract: Nine varieties of Algerian date palm fruits (Phoenix dactylifera L.) including Lahmira, Timjouhert, Adham Talmine, Deglet Talmine, Adam Boullah, Tinasser, Deglet, Deglet Nour, and Takerbouch were distinguished via Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H‐NMR) metabolomics approach. The quality was evaluated based on the metabolite composition, proximate analysis, physicochemical characteristics, and biological activities which include nitric oxide (NO) inhibition via the cell‐based approach and NO scavenging abil… Show more

“…For fruit flesh, CC exceeded 76% of the total composition, with the best record being presented by "Bouskri" (90.18%). ese results were consistent with published literature [15,27]. CC found in flesh date fruit consist mainly of reducing sugars and dietary fibers are a minor fraction.…”

“…For the studied varieties, PC ranged from 1.60 ± 0.11% obtained in "Boufgous" to 3.53 ± 0.20% obtained in "Jihel" for flesh part and from 3.20 ± 0.21% in "Amouch" to 5.00 ± 0.10% in "Ismmarti" for seeds part. Our findings were in line with other works carried out in Morocco and abroad involving several varieties [27,31,32]. Date fruits showed higher PC than other fruits such as apples (0.3%), oranges (0.7%), bananas (1.0%), and grapes (1.0%) [33].…”

“…Apart from phenolic compounds, the presence of plant steroids, triterpenoids, and other nitrogenous compounds was also responsible for anti-diabetic effects [7]. The complexity of plant metabolites anticipated the simultaneous interactions of various phytoconstituents either synergistically or antagonistically on the bioactivities [21]. Therefore, the findings of this study further strengthen previous claims regarding the anti-diabetic potential of these plants.…”

“…Sukkari dates are rich in these compounds compared to Deglet Nour variety. However, Deglet Nour are higher in sucrose content (Abdul‐Hamid et al, 2018). Additionally, fructose and galacturonic acid in Deglet Nour were found to be 2.51% and 2.23%, respectively.…”
