In the present study, we used CaCO3 nanoparticles (CCNPs) as carriers to assess the physicochemical characteristics and antibacterial effect of gentamicin sulfate (GS)-loaded CCNPs (CGPs). The results indicated that CCNPs had relatively regular chain-like structure, and the size of the crystallites was around 62.5 nm. FT-IR analysis indicated that the GS could effectively load onto CCNPs. Meanwhile, the dosage of CCNPs would affect the drug loading and entrapment efficiency of GS. CCNPs could prolong the release of GS, and the complete release of GS from CCNPs was extended up to 24 h. Additionally, CCNPs could obviously increase the antibacterial effect of GS. The zeta potential analysis and microscopic investigations indicated that the adsorbed CCNPs could increase the damage level of bacterial cell wall and enhance the permeability of cell membranes, leading to increased bacterial death.

Treatment of postsurgical infections, associated with orthopedic surgeries, has been a major concern for orthopedics. Several strategies including systematic and local administration of antibiotics have been proposed to this regard. The present work focused on fabricating alginate (Alg) modified brushite (Bru) cements, which could address osteogeneration and local antibiotic demands. To find the proper method of drug incorporation, Gentamicin sulfate (Gen) was loaded into the samples in the form of solution or powder. Several characterization tests including compression test, morphology, cytotoxicity, and cell adhesion assays were carried out to determine the proper concentration of Alg as a modifier of the Bru cement. The results indicated that addition of 1 wt% Alg led to superior mechanical and biological properties of the cement. Moreover, Alg addition changed the morphology of the cement from plate and needle‐like structures to petal‐like structure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results confirmed the successful loading of Gen on the cements, specifically when Gen solution was used, and X‐Ray Diffractometer result indicated that Gen caused a decrease in crystalline size. Furthermore, thermal analysis revealed that Gen‐loaded sample had more stable structure as the transformation temperature slightly shifted to a higher one. The stability study confirmed the chemical stability and adequate mechanical performance of the cements within 1 month of soaking time. Finally, the addition of Alg has a positive impact on the release behavior at low concentration of Gen solution so that 20% decrease within 2 weeks of release experiment was remarkably detected.

Objective Tissue engineering has been a topic of extensive research in recent years and has been applied to the regeneration and restoration of many organs including the larynx. Currently, research investigating tissue engineering of the larynx is either ongoing or in the preclinical trial stage. Methods A literature search was performed on the Advanced search field of PubMed using the keywords: “(laryncheal tissue engineering) AND (cartilage regeneration OR scaffolds OR stem cells OR biomolecules).” After applying the selection criteria, 65 articles were included in the study. Results The present review focuses on the rapidly expanding field of tissue‐engineered larynx, which aims to provide stem cell–based scaffolds combined with biological active factors such as growth factors for larynx reconstruction and regeneration. The trend in recent studies is to use new techniques for scaffold construction, such as 3D printing, are developed. All of these strategies have been instrumental in guiding optimization of the tissue‐engineered larynx, leading to a level of clinical induction beyond the in vivo animal experimental phase. Conclusions This review summarizes the current progress and outlines the necessary basic components of regenerative laryngeal medicine in preclinical fields. Finally, it considers the design of scaffolds, support of growth factors, and cell therapies toward potential clinical application.
