Physicochemical origin of space charge dynamics for aged XLPE cable insulation

Abstract: The occurrence of ageing of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable insulation greatly affects the safe operation of cable system. The influence of different ageing modes on the space charge dynamics and physicochemical properties of insulating materials in highvoltage alternating current (HVAC) XLPE cables was investigated. The XLPE specimens were obtained from un-aged cables, 1-year laboratory accelerated aged cables, and 22-year practical cables. Pulsed Electro-Acoustic (PEA) technique was used to measure th… Show more

“…During the thermal endurance test, post-crosslinking might occurr simultaneously with the degradation of the XLPE, and the post-crosslinking could optimize the crystalline morphologies of the insulation, which would reduce the accumulation of the space charge. Similar results were also obtained in [11,[18][19][20]. However, it is important to point out that the thermal degradation will dominate the process when the thermal endurance time is longer or the temperature is higher.…”

“…Tzimas et al [20] have suggested that charge trap generation may be attributed to changes in the physicochemical structure of materials, albeit that these authors do not provide explicit evidence for the chemical changes initiating ageing. Elsewhere, Li et al [21] have suggested that the distribution of ageing-related changes through the bulk of XLPE insulation serves to affect electrical properties. Thus, while the published literature contains attempts to correlation global factors such as carbonyl index and crystallinity as indicators of ageing [21][22][23] with changes in electrical properties, relationships between the onset of electrically related ageing processes, physicochemical changes within the polymer and the key chemical reactions are not well understood.…”
