In this study, two cationic gemini surfactants 12-3-12 and 12-3(OH)-12 were synthesized in our labrotory. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) values of synthesized surfactants were determined by conductivity measurements. The aggregation number (Nagg) of micelles was calculated using the pyrene probe fluorescence method. It was been investigated the corrosion effect of cationic gemini surfactants were denoted as 12-3-12 and 12-3(OH)-12 for carbon steel in 1 M HCl. The inhibition effect was investigated using weight loss, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. It has been determined that both surfactants showed the best inhibitory effect at low concentrations. The foaming capacity (FC) and the foam stability (FS) of gemini surfactants were studied by measuring the foam volume for 0.5 % (w/v) surfactant solutions and it was observed that the foaming properties of 12-3(OH)-12 gemini surfactant were better. The solubility capability of both surfactants was tested with the water-insoluble dye Sudan Red B and it was observed that the solubility increased significantly over the CMC value of the cationic gemini surfactants. Finally, the corrosion effect, foam capacity and foam stability and effects on paint solubility of the synthesized surfactants were obtained at very low concentrations.

Amino acid-based surfactants are emerging as important biocompatible and eco-friendly surfactants. This work explores C 12 and C 14 γ-alkyl aspartic acid surfactants to understand their preparation, micellization, and surface properties, including critical micelle concentration (CMC), surface tension at CMC, thermodynamic properties, and biodegradation. A duration of 24 h produced the highest yield for the synthesis of γ-alkyl aspartate from C 12 and C 14 fatty alcohols and aspartic acid. Their chemical structures were identified using elemental analysis, FT-IR, and 1 H and 13 C-NMR. Synthesized sodium γ-tetradecyl aspartate (SGTdA) possessed a lower CMC value than synthesized sodium γ-dodecyl aspartate (SGDdA). However, a higher biodegradability was observed for the shorter-chain surfactant (SGDdA) , that is, 84.6% in 7 days using activated sludge as a secondary effluent. In addition, the effect of inorganic and organic salts on the interfacial properties of surfactants was studied. It was observed that salts are very effective and active in reducing the CMC of surfactants.

Antiseptics and disinfectants are extensively used for a variety of topical and hard-surface applications. A wide variety of biocides as active chemical agents is found in these products, including alcohols, phenols, iodine, and chlorine. Many of these active agents demonstrate broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity; however, the mode of action of these agents is not well-documented. This review is focused on several examples of ionic systems based on ionic surfactants and ionic liquids as well as nanomaterials and nanoparticles acting as antiseptics and disinfectants for surfaces. It is important to note that many of these biocides may be used singly or in combination in a variety of products, which vary considerably in activity against microorganisms. Antimicrobial activity can be influenced by several factors such as formulation effects, presence of an organic load, synergy, temperature, dilution, and test method. The most promissory compounds based on ionic systems and nanomaterials published in mainly the last decade is chronologically reported in this review.
