Physiological and biochemical changes associated with cotton fibre development

Abstract: The relationship between growth and some enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism in developing cotton fibre were studied. Two respiratory pathways of glucose oxidation i.e. oxidative pentose phosphate pathway (OPPP) and glycolysis operates in the elongating cotton fibres and the extent of their operation varies with the demand for respiratory products. In this respect, hexokinase, G-6-PDH, 6PGDH, and MDH show increased activities during the period of rapid cell elongation and decreased activities when rate slows do… Show more

“…In aquatic plants under P limitation, PAs may be released extracellularly into the i surrounding environment (Healey and Hendzel, 1979;Smith and Kalff, 1981;Lapointe et al, 1994), and / or may accumulate internally in both apoplastic and symplastic tissues (Jansson et al, 1988;Thaker et al, 1996). Alkaline PA activity has been inversely related to P availability in seagrasses as well as many other aquatic plants.…”

“…Although acid PAs in terrestrial plants can be involved in important functions such as seed germination, secondary thickening of cell walls, and carbohydrate metabolism (Basra et al, 1989;Thaker et al, 1996), little is known about acid PAs and seagrasses (Table 4). In vitro acid PA activities have been used as an indicator of thermostability in Zostera marina and Z. noltii (Lutova and Feldman, 1981).…”

“…The method of Thaker et al (1996) was followed for the estimation of acid phosphatase activity. The reaction mixture consisted of 75 mM sodium acetate buffer (pH 4.2), 5 mM p-nitrophenylphosphate (in buffer), and the enzymatic solution.…”

“…Acid phosphatases are a group of enzymes that nonspecifically catalyze the hydrolysis of a variety of phosphate esters and are widely distributed in nature. They have been extensively studied in a number of plant systems (Kaneko et al 1990, Thaker et al 1996) and have considerable diversity with regard to their physical properties.…”
