Physiological Indicators in Two Lettuce Cultivars Under Saline Stress

Abstract: Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is considered as the main leafy vegetable in Brazil. In the last decades, there had been many changes in the predominant varietal types in the country, however, issues regarding the use of saline water inhibit the growth by the osmotic effect. The aim of this study is avaliate the effect of water salinity on physiological in lettuce cultivars. The experiment was carried out at the Alagoas Federal University, Arapiraca Campus, in a completely randomized design and with a 5 &times… Show more

“…The influence of salt levels on WUE has been reported in two tomato cultivars [54] and citrus plants [55] under varying levels of salinity. In two lettuce cultivars, similar results were found by Oliveira et al (2021), who determined that an increase in WUE under salt stress can be interpreted as a mechanism of tolerance to NaCl in lettuce plants [56]. Under salt stress, the transpiration rate decreased by the stomatal closure reducing water lost through transpiration [57].…”

“…The increasing water demand in agriculture resulted in using of low quality water, including saline water (Schiattone et al, 2017;de Oliveira et al, 2021); one of the abiotic stresses that can hamper plant growth and agricultural productivity (Cheng et al, 2021;Lili et al, 2021).…”
