Phytochemical Analysis and Biological Activity of Three Stachys Species (Lamiaceae) from Romania

Abstract: Three species of Stachys genus (S. byzantina, S. officinalis, S. sylvatica) were investigated in the present study in terms of aromatic profile and total polyphenol content, as well as antibacterial activity and antioxidant capacity. Gas chromatography coupled with flame ionization detection (GC/FID) was used for exploration of the herbal alcoholic extracts. Using statistical analysis, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and total phenolic chemical fingerprints were compared in order to describe differences and … Show more

“…This involved mixing 0.20 mL of the plant extract with 0.80 mL Folin-Ciocâlteu reagent (10% v/v) and 1 mL of a sodium carbonate solution (7.5% w/v). These samples were incubated for an hour at room temperature, ensuring they were shielded from light [16]. The polyphenol levels were measured using a UV-1900 SHIMADZU spectrophotometer (Shimadzu Corporation, Kyoto, Japan) at a wavelength of 750 nm.…”

“…The antioxidant activity involved testing compounds that have the ability to donate hydrogen or eliminate free radicals in the presence of DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) using a slightly modified spectroscopic method. 62 A stock methanolic solution of DPPH (25:100) is prepared by dissolving 25g of DPPH in 100 mL of methanol and stored at a temperature of -20 °C in the dark. From the stock solution, a working solution is prepared in a ratio of 10:90.…”
