Phytochemical Prospection and Modulation of Antibiotic Activity In Vitro byLippia origanoidesH.B.K. in Methicillin ResistantStaphylococcus aureus

Abstract: The Lippia origanoides H.B.K. ethanol extract (LOEE) and hexane (LOHEX), dichloromethane (LODCM), and ethyl acetate (LOEA) fractions were tested for their antimicrobial activity alone or in combination with antibiotics against a methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strain. The natural products did not show antimicrobial activity against multidrug resistant strain at the clinically significant concentrations tested. However, a modulatory effect in the antibacterial activity of the neomycin and ami… Show more

“…Thymol and carvacrol have been shown to have antimicrobial, antigenotoxic and anti-protozoal properties, and may therefore be responsible for the bioactive effects of L. origanoides essential oil (Nostro et al, 2004;Sarrazin et al, 2015aSarrazin et al, , 2015bVicuña et al, 2010;Escobar et al, 2010). However, bioactivity may also be due to a synergism of the chemical components of the essential oil (Barreto et al, 2014a).…”

“…Lippia origanoides Kunth (Verbenaceae), is an aromatic shrub found from Southern North America, through Central America, to the north of repellents (Oliveira et al, 2007;Escobar et al, 2010;Vicuña et al, 2010;Betancourt et al, 2012;Caballero-Gallardo et al, 2012;Barreto et al, 2014aBarreto et al, , 2014bSarrazin et al, 2015aSarrazin et al, , 2015bTeles et al, 2014;Vera et al, 2014). However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no existing studies exploring the potential of the essential oil of L. origanoides as a treatment against parasites in fish.…”

“…Moreover, the addition of 128 μg/mL of L. origanoides EO to the growth medium did cause a 10-fold decrease in the MIC of neomycin (2500–248 μg/mL) and amikacin (788–78 μg/mL). This demonstrated a synergistic effect between L. origanoides EO and aminoglycosides against the methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strain [ 46 ].…”

“…The various therapeutic advantages of compounds sourced from nature have been reviewed [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. In addition, about 80% of antibiotics that are recently approved for treating many life-threatening infections are sourced from natural products (NPs) [ 10 ].…”
